Milwaukee council OKs outside firm to assist with Morales litigation


The Milwaukee City Attorney s Office will have help from an outside law firm to represent the city in its ongoing legal entanglements with ousted Police Chief Alfonso Morales, under a measure approved by the Common Council Tuesday.
The resolution allows the City Attorney s Office to hire Milwaukee-based Cade Law Group LLC at a rate of $350 per hour for the services of attorney Nate Cade and $325 per hour for the services of attorney Carlos Pastrana.
The agreement ends Dec. 31 and includes a cap of $40,000 for the law firm s services, unless otherwise agreed to in writing.
Ald. Michael Murphy voted against the resolution. ....

Contested judicial races and disciplinary actions against attorneys made the Wisconsin Law Journal’s list of most-read stories in 2020.
Here’s a look back at the top 10 stories of the year:
Justice Jill Karofsky was among the big winners of contested judicial races on the April ballot. She beat out an incumbent justice, Dan Kelly. Separately, the Court of Appeals Judge Lisa Neubauer retained her seat, while incumbents on the Milwaukee County Circuit Court didn’t fair well. The results can be found here.
Racine attorney John W. Knuteson died of COVID-19 in April. Knuteson practiced corporate and real estate law at Knuteson, Hinkston & Quinn in Racine, a firm he had opened in 1986. He has also served as the Wind Point/North Bay municipal judge since 2007. ....

Milwaukee Common Council members criticize Gimbel’s ‘racist remarks’ on radio show
Eleven members of the Milwaukee Common Council are criticizing the attorney Franklyn Gimbel’s comments about the history of policing in the city, calling his remarks racist, inaccurate and “profoundly disturbing.”
During the five-minute radio interview, Gimbel said he served on the Fire and Police Commission from 1977-82 while Harold Breier was chief of police.
“He was an old-fashioned law-and-order guy if ever there was one,” Gimbel said.
The Milwaukee aldermen and alderwomen Ashanti Hamilton, Cavalier Johnson, Nik Kovac, Nikiya Dodd, Milele A. Coggs, Khalif J. Rainey, JoCasta Zamarripa, Chantia Lewis, Mark A. Borkowski, Jóse G. Pérez and Russell W. Stamper II released a joint statement late on Wednesday afternoon that said Gimbel’s remarks were racist, inaccurate and outrageous. ....
