Labor provisions threaten Milwaukee Tool's relocation to city's downtown

MILWAUKEE The Milwaukee Common Council is prepared to say no to providing $20 million in subsidies for Milwaukee Tool’s relocation to downtown Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Business Journal reports that a majority of council members are against the idea unless the company commits to a community benefits agreement.
The council passed the Community-Oriented, Responsible and Equitable (CORE) Development Zone Resolution in 2019, which encourages community benefits agreements between business owners and service sector workers in Milwaukee’s central business district.
“Milwaukee has a crisis of racial and economic inequality and injustice,” said Peter Rickman, president of the Milwaukee Area Service and Hospitality Organization (MASH). “Providing subsidies to corporations for office developments without ensuring that the jobs that result from that for food service workers, janitors and security guards is only going to worsen this problem.” ....

Milwaukee Tool plans to renovate this building in downtown Milwaukee and eventually locate up to 2,000 employees in the space.

The Redevelopment Authority of the City of Milwaukee unanimously approved a Tax Incremental District (TID) for the project Thursday. Under that designation, Milwaukee taxpayers would provide the grant and city officials would count on increased property taxes and values for repayment.

Union wants benefits for janitors working at Milwaukee Tool office

A plan to provide up to $20 million in city financing for Milwaukee Tool s new downtown office, which could have up to 2,000 employees, received its first public approval Thursday.
But that was only after a labor organization raised concerns about the lack of a community benefits agreement on wages, benefits and working conditions for janitors and other employees of outside vendors at the future office.
The Redevelopment Authority board unanimously recommended approval for the financing plan, which also needs Common Council approval.
But those same concerns likely will surface at the proposal s next public hearing. That could be at the council s Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee on April 27. ....
