HANOI, March 14 (Vietnam News/ANN): Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has stressed the strategic importance of the Mekong Delta as it accounts for 20 per cent of the world’s rice exports but is facing critical challenges posed by climate change.
At a conference on climate-resilient and sustainable development of the delta in Can Tho City on Saturday (March 13), the Prime Minister urged attendees to continue identifying challenges caused by climate change, and to implement top-priority projects in a timely manner. ....

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Cambodian fisherman Tin Yusos tucks into a meal of the previous day’s catch with his wife and granddaughter aboard a boat which doubles as their home moored by the banks of the Tonle Sap River.

They plan to set out for another day of fishing in the area of the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers, though his expectations are low.
“There are no big fish anymore,” said Tin Yusos, 57. In the past, he could get a haul of about 30 kilogram (66 lb) of fish a day. Now he often catches just over one kilogram, worth about 15,000 riel ($3.69). ....

Chinese Regime Controls ASEAN Countries Via Mekong River’s ‘Water Faucet,’ Expert Says
The Chinese regime is using the Mekong River, the most important water system in Southeast Asia, to control half of the ten member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), an expert said.
The Mekong River originates on China’s Tibetan Plateau and flows through six countries. In early 2021, it once again experienced a serious drop in water levels, causing widespread international concerns. The Mekong River Commission, an international organization, issued a statement on Feb. 12, saying that the Mekong River water levels have fallen to “worrying levels.” ....

New Delhi, Feb 25, The Biden administration in the US has urged China not to impede the flow of Mekong river waters to southeastasian countries downstream. Suspicions about the use of transboundary rivers for geopolitical gains was recently highlighted by IndiaNarrative.com when it reported that China had constructed 11 dams over the Mekong, threatening water flows to several ASEAN countries. Besides, China had decided to build a 60-gigawatt mega-dam on the Brahmaputra river, just 30 km away from the Indian border, which could restrict the water flows to India and Bangladesh.
