Crystal Echo Hawk, an enrolled member of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma, has become a well-known advocate for Native peoples.
Born in Provo, Utah, Echo Hawk, 49, founded IllumiNative, which aims to transform public perceptions and stereotypes of Native people. Echo Hawk currently serves as IllumiNative s president and chief executive officer. The organization was among the advocacy groups that were instrumental in compelling the Washington National Football League organization to change its name and logo in 2020 because it had long been considered offensive.
Notably, Echo Hawk designed and helped lead a two-year, $3.2 million research and strategy-setting initiative called the Reclaiming Native Truth Project, which was completed in 2018. The project has been widely considered as the largest public opinion research and strategy setting initiative ever conducted for, and about, Native Americans. ....

TikTok, the mobile application that quickly became a defining cultural aspect of 2020, is most known as a platform where dances and comedy videos go viral. But Native and Indigenous individuals are also using the app to challenge stereotypes about their cultures, and let the world know they are not just relics of the past.
Over the past few months, the hashtag #NativeTikTok has racked up more than 1.3 billion views. One popular creator is James Jones, a performer, artist and cultural educator from Alberta, Canada, who identifies as Cree. Jones, who is known as @notoriouscree to his 2.4 million TikTok followers, told CBS News his goal is to use the platform to show the world that Native and Indigenous individuals are still here. ....

In testimony sessions this week with the Nebraska Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, local Tribal leaders said it’s time for schools statewide to have a reckoning around the use of Native American names, symbols, and images for their mascots.
The conversations came soon after the Cleveland Indians announced the team would begin the process of retiring its name and Native American mascot, which both had been widely criticized for popularizing racist depictions of Indigenous people. And in July, the Washington Football Team made its new name official after dropping its previous name, a racial slur for Native Americans. ....
