Madison Moilanen came to St. Cloud from Duluth last year in the middle of the pandemic for a clean start.
She didn t know anyone here.
Moilanen had tried to get sober while in Duluth. But it didn t last because she kept going back to the same environment and expecting different results, she told the St. Cloud Times last week.
In St. Cloud she found success and sobriety after years using heroin and methamphetamine.
But for many with substance use disorder, the pandemic and the related shut down brought isolation and a return to substance abuse.
Overdose deaths rose 27% in Minnesota from 2019 to 2020, according to a Department of Health analysis released in early May. And that number doesn t capture all the people who d been sober and started using again and others who developed a substance use disorder due to the many stresses inherent in the pandemic. ....

Local Nonprofit Awarded Grant to Help Veterans With Substance Use Disorders

(KNSI) – A local nonprofit that provides recovery services for people with substance use disorders has earned a big grant from the state of Minnesota, and it intends to focus those funds on veterans.
The state has awarded the Recovery Community Network with a $143,000 grant that will be used to fund a full-time position centered on helping veterans and their family members who are living with a substance use disorder. The person hired into that role will also help RCN partner with other agencies like the VA and the Central Minnesota Mental Health Center.
“The majority of our troops return home from a deployment with very few adjustment problems,” said RCN’s director Maj. John Donovan, Ret., who is also an Army veteran. “However, some do return with adjustment issues and often those issues will manifest themselves in problems like divorce, depression, substance abuse and suicide. Recovery Community Network Receives $143,000 Grant
GRANT FUNDING FOR RCN
The Recovery Community Network, the brain child of Major John Donovan of the U.S. Army (Retired) has received a significant grant in the sum of $143,000 from the State of Minnesota, which will be used, at least in part, to fund a full time position to work with the Veteran community, as well as working with community agencies including Veterans Administration, The St. Cloud Police Department, The Central Minnesota Justice System, as well as Central Minnesota Mental Health Center, and Veterans Services Officers.
