ETSU announces 1911 Society honorees


Eleven members of the Class of 2021 who have distinguished themselves for academic excellence, service and leadership at East Tennessee State University have been inducted into the 1911 Society.
Named in commemoration of the year when ETSU was founded, the 1911 Society recognizes the university’s most notable graduates from undergraduate, graduate and professional programs. The selection committee evaluates applicants on academic achievement; sustained service; honors, awards, recognitions, publications and presentations; demonstrated leadership; work experience, such as study abroad, internships, externships and clinicals; and personal narratives.
ETSU President Brian Noland said, “For more than a century, ETSU has carried forth a mission to improve the quality of life for the people of this region. The substance abuse crisis disproportionately impacts Appalachia, where in 2018 the overdose mortality rate for people ages 25–54 was 43 percent higher than the rest of the country.

Opioid recovery non-profit founded by Trussville councilor awarded large grant

The Will Bright Foundation, founded by Trussville City Councilor Lisa Bright and her husband Bill, was awarded a grant by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), through INSPIRE (Investments Supporting Partnerships in Recovery Ecosystems).
The INSPIRE initiative addresses the substance abuse crisis by assisting with workforce entry or re-entry programs. The Will Bright Foundation, in partnership with the University of Alabama and others, “will expand and enhance the ongoing recovery and training program of the foundation,” a press release stated.
Out of $9.4 million, the ARC awarded the Will Bright Foundation $355,858. Other sources are adding to the fund at the tune of $153,292. The grant will be used to expand and enhance a recovery and training program. ....
