Copley Square needs love and care, not the bloated redesign proposed by the city. The argument to justify the redesign seems to have devolved into a message of: We need to accommodate a few major events a year. In fact, the Back Bay Association’s letter last week focuses on the heavy activities in the square and not the passive uses that so many enjoy now on the large lawn and under the trees (“Copley Square redesign combines park and public gathering space,” May 11). The city’s own survey showed that more than half of the respondents want to “upgrade the existing square with some redesign,” not a $15.5 million project. Spending this amount on a park that primarily needs maintenance and tweaking when it could have gone toward parks i ....

Three buildings along Boylston Street in the Back Bay would get a boost of five stories for office, retail, and residential space under a proposed project that would also hold onto the row’s historic facade.
Plans filed with the Boston Planning & Development Agency for 761-793 Boylston St. in March outline a vision for the new space above the current locations of Crate & Barrel, Atlantic Fish Co., and Abe & Louie’s each the ground floor tenants of the existing three three-story buildings.
The project, proposed by Travistock Development Co., calls for overhauling the interior of the Crate & Barrel location (the middle of the three) and reconfiguring it to form the base of the upward addition, plans indicate. ....

The final design for what will be Copley Square’s biggest face lift since the 1980s is aimed at balancing the demands placed on the much-used, two-acre park in the heart of the Back Bay.
One of the biggest changes on tap: The existing brick plaza area and the main lawn will essentially trade places. The switch means more grass by Trinity Church and a “flexible hardscape” along the Dartmouth Street side. The hope is to better accommodate concerts and other events, particularly those that could be staged across Dartmouth Street on the steps of the Boston Public Library’s McKim Building if the street is ....

Copley Square had a major renovation in the 1980s, transforming it into more of a green space.Blake Nissen for The Boston Globe
The Walsh administration is embarking on a possible makeover for Copley Square, one of the city’s most recognizable and popular public spaces, and is soliciting ideas that range from modest upgrades to a major redesign.
Framed by some of Boston’s most architecturally significant buildings, including the Boston Public Library and Trinity Church, Copley Square is paying the price for its popularity. The pavement is cracked and irregular in spots. Many trees are in rough shape, as are parts of the lawn in front of the church. And the fountain is badly in need of modernizing. ....
