Teachers, board negotiators reach tentative contract agreement | News, Sports, Jobs

Negotiators for the Minot Public School Board and the Minot Education Association have reached a tentative agreement on a two-year contract for teachers. The agreement must be approved by the board and the teachers union.
According to district business manager Scott Moum, the tentative agreement calls for a $400 increase on the base salary for a beginning teacher in 2021-2022 and another $400 increase on the base salary for a beginning teacher in 2022-23. Moum said that amounts to a .95 percent increase on the base in 2021-22 and a .94 percent increase in 22-23. The existing salary schedule would be honored and teachers would be able to move up the salary schedule based on increased education and experience. Health insurance costs are expected to increase 4 percent. The total additional cost to the district for the first year of the contract is $1.794 million and the total projected cost is $1.805 million. ....

Masks will be required in the Minot Public Schools through May 26, but will be optional for the May 30 graduation ceremony and for students attending summer school.
The Minot Public School Board voted 5-0 to make the change on Friday after teachers, parents and students spoke at a public forum expressing opinions both for and against the masking policy.
Before the final vote, board member Miranda Schuler had made a motion calling for masks to be made optional in the school district after May 12. Board president Jim Rostad seconded the motion. Rostad said he has already had the COVID-19 virus and his doctor has told him he has immunity to the virus for up to nine months and possibly for life. Both were in favor of ending the mask requirement in the schools. ....

Refinancing bonds could save Minot Public Schools $1.5 million in interest | News, Sports, Jobs

The Minot Public School Board gave unanimous approval on Tuesday to a resolution to refund two outstanding general obligation school bonds.
Business Manager Scott Moum told the board that refinancing will potentially save the school district between $1.5 and $1.65 million in interest over the next 12 years.
The total combined remaning debt on the two bonds is $15.575 million. The original bonds were for $9.9 million in 2014 and $7 million in 2011. They will be combined into one bond at a more favorable interest rate.
Moum said there will be no additional cost to taxpayers or difference in mill requests. Payments might go down slightly because the interest will be less. ....
