Columbia: DNR issues warning about Invasive mussels in product sold at SC aquarium, pet supply stores

Officials with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources on Friday issued a warning to anyone who owns a home aquarium.Officials confirmed that invasive zebra mussels have been found in containers of moss balls, a species of filamentous algae used in home aquariums. The zebra mussel-infested product has been found in stores of two different pet supply chains in South Carolina.Fish and Wildlife officials in Oregon were first alerted about this situation after a Seattle PetCo store employee found zebra mussels attached and inside “Betta Buddy Marimo Ball” brand moss plants. The mussel-infested balls have since been found for sale in other states, including South Carolina. A nationwide effort to halt the sale of these products and remove them from stores nationwide is now underway.South Carolina consumers who may have already purchased one of these products should be aware that the moss balls themselves, or water from aquarium tanks ....

Aquatic Invasive Species Bureau Chief for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, Tom Woolf has details.
“This is an issue that s just arisen in the last couple days,” said Woolf. “What we have found is an aquarium plant, called moss balls, which are a ball of algae that people put in their fish tanks. These moss balls have been found with zebra mussels on them and they ve been distributed not just to Montana but throughout the country.”
Woolf said the nation’s wildlife agencies are mobilizing to notify the public about this possible hazard. ....
