Croatian FM rejects diplomatic note from BiH FM on Exclusive Economic Zone

Croatia’s ministry of foreign and European affairs has rejected as unfounded a diplomatic note sent at the end of January by Bosnia and Herzegovina’s foreign ministry related to the announcement of plans to declare an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in Croatia’s part of the Adriatic Sea, the national news agency Hina confirmed on Thursday.
BiH’s Foreign Minister Bisera Turković sent the note after the announcement that Croatia would declare an EEZ, stating that it endangered the rights of BiH, in particular its right to access the high seas.
In its response to Sarajevo, Croatia’s ministry said it saw no reason for such a reaction because there were no violations of international law in this case, which senior BiH’s officials, such as current Presidency Chairman Milorad Dodik, agreed with. ....

EEZs in the Adriatic: challenges and opportunities in a semi-enclosed sea

I. Introduction
This blogpost is going to discuss the implications of the EEZs of Croatia and Italy in the Adriatic with regard to the interests of and open issues with third States, hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation, maritime transport, fishing, and opportunities for offshore renewable energies.
The Adriatic Sea, a sub-sea of the Mediterranean, as a semi-enclosed sea previously accounted for three riparian States: Albania, Italy, and Yugoslavia. The dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) in the early 1990s has led to the establishment of four new littoral States: Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Slovenia. Generally, the Adriatic’s eco-system is particularly vulnerable as its waters are shallow and the exchange or renewal of waters with the Ionian Sea through the relatively narrow Strait of Otranto is limited (Vidas 2013: 353; Blake and Topalović 1996: 4; see also Gačić et al 2001). ....

Foreign ministers of Croatia, Italy and Slovenia adopt joint statement

Croatia’s Adriatic coast
ZAGREB, Dec 19 (Hina) – The foreign ministers of Croatia, Italy and Slovenia adopted a joint statement in Trieste on Saturday saying that they shared the vision of the Adriatic Sea as a bridge connecting all the nations in this region and as a source of prosperity for all.
The meeting was held following the announcements by Italy and Croatia that they would declare their respective exclusive economic zones in the Adriatic.
The Adriatic Sea, as a half-closed sea with intensive maritime traffic and a vulnerable ecosystem, needs an integrated approach to environmental protection, risk prevention and sustainable development, says the joint statement signed by Foreign Ministers Gordan Grlic Radman of Croatia, Luigi Di Maio of Italy and Anze Logar of Slovenia. ....

Janša: Croatia and Italy did not need to invite Slovenia for talks about exclusive economic zones

Croatia and Italy will declare an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) – together with Slovenia – after a January 2021 trilateral meeting, said Croatian Foreign and European Affairs Minister Gordan Grlić Radman, confirming that “an understanding has been reached” between the three countries.
The three countries will also discuss strengthening cooperation in the Adriatic area, with the aim of its environmental protection and blue economy management, the minister added.
Croatian Agriculture Minister Marija Vučković said the EEZ would further improve an already “deep, lately even excellent cooperation with Italy” on the issues of fishing fleets and resource management.
“SDP will support the declaration of an EEZ because that was agreed with our partners in the EU, but why we are going in that direction is something that the government needs to be asked,” SDP President Pedja Grbin said in parliament. ....
