DEFIANCE SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES ADMIN. PAY RAISES, TALKS SUMMER DEAD-PERIOD

At this week’s meeting of the Defiance City School Board of Education, salary adjustments were approved for administrators and confidential staff. Each of those groups was approved for a 3% wage increase, but it excludes the superintendent and treasurer of the district. Non-bargaining personnel of Defiance City Schools were also awarded a stipend of 3% of their salaries for extra efforts during the pandemic.
Defiance City Schools have hired three new intervention specialists for the district, and approved 2017 DHS grad Rachel Gerken as a new 5th grade teacher.
The Defiance Band Boosters donated $11,000 in funds for a new 28-foot trailer to haul equipment. And there was discussion about implementing a summer dead period for athletes, to take a break from activities; but no action was taken. ....

A gay Ohio middle school student was brutally attacked by other students just because he was wearing a Pride flag.
Tristen Torrez, 14, told local news station
WTOL 11 that he had been standing on the bleachers at Defiance Middle School in Defiance, Ohio. He said students were allowed outside on Thursday (27 May) to celebrate the last day of classes. But instead of celebrating, Torrez was attacked by fellow students because he was wearing a Pride flag – which was caught on video and shared on social media. ....

Area superintendents reflect on 2020, look ahead to 2021


The year 2020 has been strange, at times sad, and mostly difficult for everyone.
The impact from the COVID-19 pandemic has meant changes for people not only in their everyday lives, but in their professional lives as well. Around the country, those working in education watched schools shut down in March, and then spent months planning for students to return to in-person learning this fall.
As the calendar turns to 2021 on Friday, a trio of area superintendents are hopeful next year will be better than the previous one. With the announcement by Gov. Mike DeWine, adults who work in schools in Ohio will have access to the COVID-19 vaccine early in 2021 as part of Phase 1B, their hope is even greater. ....
