CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (Tribune News Service) After a seven-month deployment to the Middle East and Africa, the more than 5,000 Marines and sailors of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit began disembarking at Camp Pendleton Friday, the Marines said in a statement.
The MEU includes the San Diego-based amphibious assault ship Makin Island and amphibious transport docks Somerset and San Diego. The sailors and Marines deployed in November.
The unit supported the withdrawal of U.S. troops in Somalia as well as operations in Iraq and Syria. After its combat support and training missions, the unit sailed to Alaska this month to participate in a joint training exercise meaning the unit went from the hot, desert climes of the Persian Gulf to the cold waters of the Arctic. ....

The San Diego-based aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and Makin Island amphibious ready group have converged on Alaska in the massive Northern Edge 21 training exercise.

The Navy said Wednesday the Roosevelt has conducted more than 300 aircraft launches and traps as elements of the Camp Pendleton-based 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit landed at Cold Bay on the Aleutian Peninsula.

Castellvi was the commanding general of the Camp Pendleton-based 1st Marine Division until September. He was named in a previous investigation as someone who has some responsibility in the accident, however, the Marines did not punish him.
The commanding officers of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and Battalion Landing Team involved in the accident were both relieved of command and seven other Marines faced other administrative or disciplinary actions, the Marines said.
That investigation, which was released last month, was focused on the July 30 incident. A separate investigation is now underway looking at the formation of the 15th MEU. The Marines’ first investigation found that the vehicles the battalion landing team brought to the MEU were in poor condition and that Marines did not receive required training that might have helped them escape a sinking vehicle. ....
