Rebecca Khodak was working as a teller for the Royal Bank of Canada on Dec. 13, 2017 when a man walked in and held her hostage along with more than a dozen other people.
Three-and-a-half years later, Khodak recounted the terrifying hour between when Ali Zaraeeneh, 25, walked into the bank waving a handgun and when officers from York Regional Police shot him and killed him.
My first thought was, who would pull a prank like that at a bank? That s one of the stupidest things you could do, Khodak told a coroner s inquest on Tuesday that s tasked with analyzing the circumstances surround Zaraeeneh s death. In particular, the inquest is concerned with the ways in which police handle scenarios involving people who are emotionally disturbed. ....

An inquest into the death of a man who was killed by police in York Region following a hostage situation will begin later this month, Ontario’s Coroner s Office announced Friday.
Dr. Joel Kirsh, Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Region, Central East Office, made the announcement by way of a news release issued by the Ministry of the Solicitor General.
The inquest will examine the December 13, 2017 death of 25-year-old Ali Zaraeeneh, who the province says died following injuries sustained from an interaction with York Regional Police.
In an email to CTV News Toronto, the Office of the Chief Coroner confirmed that officers with York Regional Police shot and killed Zaraeeneh after he allegedly stormed an RBC bank branch, located near Major Mackenzie Drive West and Dufferin Street in Vaughan, and took 13 people, including staff and customers, hostage. ....

An inquest has been called into the shooting death of a man during a hostage situation at a bank in Vaughan in the winter of 2017.
Dr. Joel Kirsh, Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Region, Central East Office, said in a statement Friday the inquest will look into the circumstances surrounding the death of 25-year-old Ali Zaraeeneh, who was fatally shot by York Regional Police on December 13, 2017.
“The inquest is expected to last five days and will hear from approximately 10 witnesses,” said Dr. Kirsh. “The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.” ....
