New York Zoo kicks off 100th year on Saturday

The zoo in Thompson Park is opening its summer season Saturday with a birthday celebration.
The first 200 guests will get a cupcake and the celebration also will include serving birthday cake.
The celebration will be the zoo’s way to kick off its 100th year in the north country and 30th year as a Conservancy.
Joshua Baughn, director of marketing and development, said the zoo has a lot to celebrate after a year of the pandemic.
“We’re excited to get back and see people visit their animal friends at the zoo,” he said.
The zoo will host a series of events and activities celebrating the 100th anniversary throughout the summer season, culminating with a black tie event on Aug. 28. ....

Former associates honor the drive, dedication of late state Sen. Douglas Barclay

In the summer of 2019, former state Sen. H. Douglas Barclay invited his good friend Joseph L. Rich down to his spacious parcel, Douglaston Salmon Run, County Route 5, Pulaski. Mr. Rich hopped into a four-wheeler, with Mr. Barclay confidently at the wheel.
“He took me on a joy ride like you wouldn’t believe,” Mr. Rich recalled on Tuesday, two days after Mr. Barclay died at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of exemplary public service. “I mean it was up the hills and down the hills. I told him it was better than any ride at the fair. I was holding on for dear life.” ....
