The Irish Cancer Society (ICS) has put out an urgent call for nurses to work in end-of-life services in Louth and Meath.
According to the ICS, there has not been a higher need nationwide for palliative care nurses since the pandemic began, these staff shortages are being felt more acutely in some parts of the country, including Louth and Meath.
Director of Services for ICS, Donal Buggy, encouraged any registered nurse who may be interested to get in touch with them to become a Night Nurse.

Consultations on expanding medical aid in dying begin in Quebec City

QUEBEC CITY
A committee at the Quebec National Assembly began new work Friday on possibly expanding medical assistance people who want to end their lives.
In 2014, Quebec enacted a law to offer medical assistance in dying (MAID) to people who fit within a certain category: patients of adult age, suffering from a serious and incurable illness, at the end of life, where their suffering was deemed intolerable.
The end-of-life criterion was eliminated in 2020 in response to a Superior Court ruling in favour of Nicole Gladu and Jean Truchon, who were suffering from serious health problems without being in agony.

Welsh Ambulance Service and Macmillan Cancer Support launch new initiative to improve care for terminally ill patients
The Welsh Ambulance Service has joined forces with Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales to launch a new initiative to improve the care delivered to terminally ill patients.
The collaboration, which launches this Dying Matters Awareness Week (10-16 May 2021), is designed to improve the training delivered to ambulance crews so they can provide the very best care for patients at the end of life.
The training will help to give staff a greater understanding of end of life care, supporting clinicians to better recognise when a patient is nearing end of their life, and improving communication and symptom management skills to prevent avoidable hospital admissions.

A CHARITY for the terminally ill is urging Stormont to prioritise end-of-life care, ahead of a debate tomorrow.
The plea from Marie Curie comes as the Assembly prepares to debate a motion on the absence of end-of-life and bereavement support in the Executive s Programme for Government.

Since the Covid pandemic began, almost 19,000 people have died from all causes in Northern Ireland - a 14 per cent increase on the five-year average.
