JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African grocery retailer Pick n Pay reported a 21.4% decline in annual earnings on Wednesday, weighed down by a ban on the sale of alcohol and other products and by one-off compensation costs.
Headline earnings per share (HEPS), the main profit measure in South Africa, for the 52 weeks ended Feb. 28 fell to 229.31 cents from 291.90 cents. ....

Verizon loses more-than-expected wireless subscribers

(Reuters) -Verizon Communications Inc said on Wednesday it lost more wireless subscribers than expected during the first quarter as it battled intense competition from T-Mobile US Inc and AT&T Inc to attract customers.
As the 5G technology gains traction, customers have been exploring competitive options from the big three telecoms carriers, which are making big investments to upgrade their networks.
Verizon lost 178,000 wireless phone subscribers in the first quarter, more than 121,700 subscriber loss estimated by FactSet.
Total operating revenue rose about 4% to $32.9 billion, compared with analysts’ estimates of $32.46 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv. ....

Auto retailer Lithia Motors profit beats on strong demand, higher prices

(Reuters) -Lithia Motors Inc topped Wall Street estimates for first-quarter profit on Wednesday as the auto retailer benefited from strong demand and higher vehicle prices.
A global semiconductor chip shortage has created a supply crunch and forced automakers to raise prices, a move that is aiding earnings for the sector.
Lithia said its total vehicle gross profit per unit increased 18.7% to $4,392 in the quarter.
Sales are also being boosted by low interest rates and a preference for private vehicles during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Just like AutoNation yesterday, Lithia Motors’ results were stronger than expected on all fronts,” J.P.Morgan analyst Rajat Gupta said in a note. ....
