Undergraduates Celebrate Second Consecutive Virtual Housing Day | News

Bedecked in House-themed paraphernalia and boasting festive Zoom backgrounds, undergraduates welcomed members of the Class of 2024 to their upperclassmen houses during the Collegeâs second consecutive virtual Housing Day Friday.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Housing Day was a riotous affair replete with house-themed music videos, âdorm-storming,â and house-wide socials. This year, House Committee chairs endeavored to replicate those traditions and implement new ones in a remote setting.
The day commenced with freshmen congregating in a special Housing Day webinar hosted by the Dean of Students Office to chat with House Committee chairs and build anticipation for the imminent unveiling of their housing assignments. ....

Harvard seniors and freshmen share Housing Day thoughts

This year will mark the second time Harvard hosts its annual Housing Day for first-year students online last year, in the rush of campus closing, and this year, with more time to prepare. On Friday, the College will reveal each freshman’s assigned House via Zoom, rather than hosting a traditional, raucously exuberant, in-person event.
For many freshmen, the previous weeks have often been dominated by “blocking”: Harvard’s distinctive, notoriously stressful process of moving them into the residential Houses where most will live for the next three years. House assignments themselves are churned out randomly by computer, but blocking allows first-years to choose up to seven other classmates with whom they’d like to be placed in the same House. These blockmates frequently end up rooming together as well and, in many cases, become close friends. ....

After a Socially Distant Fall, Freshmen Will Face Blocking Process Next Semester | News

Despite their unusual introduction to classmates this fall, Harvard freshmen will face the process of blocking â choosing students with whom they will share an upperclassman House â this spring, administrators explained at a virtual panel Wednesday.
Senior Assistant Dean of Residential Life and First-Year Students Nekesa C. Straker, Director of Housing Carina A. Myteveli, and other College administrators discussed the housing application process for rising sophomores at the panel.
Straker â who was joined by Assistant Director of Housing Brian M. Boughton and several peer advising fellows â opened the panel by acknowledging studentsâ anxieties about applying for housing given the atypical fall semester. In addition to the social distancing regulations on-campus freshmen navigated in the fall, Harvard College announced on Dec. 1 that it would prioritize housing for upperclassmen in the spring, reducing in-person socializing opportunities for freshme ....
