Pastor dies less than a month after revealing cancer battle

First Christian Church Disciples of Christ leader and REACH founder, Tim Dayton of Roanoke, Virginia, died in his sleep Monday after battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer for more than a year. He was 66.
“Our dad passed away last night at 11 PM. He was not in pain or confused; he simply went to sleep and then did not wake up,” his daughter Robyn Dayton wrote in a statement published on Caring Bridge Tuesday.
“We, his family, were sitting around his bed-sharing memories and laughing as he slept. The last sounds he was surrounded by were those of family, humor, and love. We miss him fiercely but are so grateful that the final phase of his cancer was not prolonged. It is a gift to know that he is not in pain or anticipating pain any longer.” ....

First Christian Church Disciples of Christ leader and REACH founder, Tim Dayton of Roanoke, Virginia, died in his sleep Monday after battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer for more than a year. He was 66.

The markers remember six Black men who were killed by lynch mobs from 1878 to 1911 in Shelby County.

SHELBYVILLE, Ky. Three blue and gold markers are now standing in downtown Shelbyville to remember several lynching victims killed more than a century earlier.
I ve lived here all my life, Paul Schmidt said. I had not heard of them. And I was embarrassed and ashamed and didn t know how to talk about them.
The markers remember six Black men who were killed by lynch mobs from 1878 to 1911 in Shelby County: Reuben Dennis, Sam Pulliam, Clarence Garnett, Jimbo Fields, Wade Patterson and Eugene Marshall. Some of the men were taken to the railroad bridge near downtown and hanged from the tracks. ....

Eileen Ruth Schank, 93, of Wheeling, WV, passed away Sunday, January 10, 2021 at the Wheeling Hospital Continuous Care Center.
She was born August 11, 1927, in Wheeling, WV, daughter of the late Carl and Lula Blanche Conaway Schank.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl, Reece & Edward Schank; three sisters, Adeline Virginia Schank Clark, Sarah Witt Ray & Dorothy Martin; and five nephews.
Eileen graduated from Triadelphia High School and retired as a secretary/receptionist from Kepner Funeral Homes after 31 years. She was always there for everyone and was more like a mother and grandmother. Eileen was the guiding light of the family. ....

Fresh Start for Women making progress on renovations


Fresh Start for Women has made headway in its renovation process for one of its Second Street housing facilities, according to Carol Adkins, founder and board chair at Fresh Start for Women Inc.
Fresh Start for Women Inc. provides transitional housing for women in recovery and their children. Through the transitional program, Adkins previously said Fresh Start has aided many women in getting back on their feet to find stable jobs, purchase their own homes and even regain custody of their children.
The organization currently operates three residences on Second Street in Owensboro.
Adkins said the organization was able to finish having a new stairway installed at one of the facilities with funding from First Christian Church Disciples of Christ and donated supplies from local businesses — Mid South Equipment and Modern Welding. ....
