Al-Qaeda Gaining Strength in Afghanistan: US Treasury
The US Treasury Department said that the al-Qaeda is gaining strength in Afghanistan while “continuing to operate with the Taliban under the group’s protection.” 
“Al-Qaeda broadly still depends on donations from likeminded supporters, and from individuals who believe that their money is supporting humanitarian or charitable causes,” it said in a report released on January 4. 
The US Treasury Department also said that “al-Qaeda capitalizes on its relationship with the Taliban through its network of mentors and advisers who are embedded with the Taliban, providing advice, guidance, and financial support.” 
“Senior Haqqani network figures have discussed forming a new joint unit of armed fighters in cooperation with and funded by al-Qaeda,” it said.    ....

Saleh blames Taliban for maintaining ties with Al Qaeda

KABUL; First Vice President Amrullah on Sunday said that the Taliban still maintains ties with al Qaeda and that their separation “is harder than desalination.”
Saleh on Twitter wrote that Afghan forces killed three al-Qaeda members in a Taliban compound in southern Afghanistan ten months after the Taliban committed to separate itself from the network as part of their deal with the United States. But Mawlawi Abdul Hakim Sharaee, a member of the Taliban’s leadership council, said that the group will not allow any foreign fighters to use Afghanistan’s soil against any other country. This is the first time that a member of the Taliban leadership has spoken about the future of foreign fighters in Afghanistan. Sharaee said that based on the US-Taliban agreement, Afghanistan’s soil will not be used against any other country. ....

Three senators arrested in Balkh for allegedly accepting $40,000 in bribes

National Security Directorate (NDS) and the Attorney General’s Office confirmed Monday that three senior senators, from the Meshrano Jirga (Upper House of Parliament), were arrested in Balkh province and have been charged with accepting bribes. 
 
In a joint statement issued by the NDS and AGO, the security organizations said the senators have been accused of accepting $40,000 in bribes and have been transferred to Kabul.
 
 
Addressing a press conference earlier Monday in Mazar-e-Sharif, Balkh Governor Mohammad Farhad Azimi said the three senators had been sent to the province to inspect revenue offices but that based on intelligence gathered the delegation had been arrested.   ....

KANDAHAR CITY - President Ashraf Ghani on Thursday said the government was ready to respond to Taliban’s demands if they stopped bloodshed.
The president arrived in southern Kandahar province today to assess the security situation of the province. He was accompanied by First Vice President Amrullah Saleh, National Security Advisor Dr. Hamdullah Mohib and some ministers.
He first attended a meeting of military and civilian officials in Kandahar at the headquarters of the Atal Military Corps.
The meeting was attended by local civilian and military officials who presented their demands and proposals regarding advanced equipment, uniforms, promotions, appointments, treatment of the wounded, personnel rotation, privileges, electronic IDs, timely supplies, anti-corruption and security and defense. ....
