April 5, 2021 – The Clarke Lake Geothermal Development Project in northern British Columbia got an injection of nearly $40.5 million in federal investments to develop its geothermal electricity production facility, and showcase its commercial viability.
The wholly owned and Indigenous-led project is being developed in the existing Clarke Lake gas field, and will use the mid-grade geothermal heat resources in its reservoir to reduce emissions by displacing fossil fuels, reports Natural Resources Canada, adding the project will also demonstrate “the value of geothermal energy as a viable clean energy technology for rural, Indigenous and northern communities”. ....

Federal government announces $40.5M Clarke Lake geothermal project

FORT NELSON, B.C. – The federal government announced $40.5 million to the Clarke Lake Geothermal Project on Friday.
“The technology that was applied to natural gas exploration is being adapted to geothermal energy development in exciting ways,” says Fort Nelson mayor Gary Foster.
“The repurposing of idle gas fields is such an innovative idea that will benefit the entire country and set us on a path for a cleaner future, not just for ourselves, but for the planet.”
Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Seamus O’Regan Jr., announced the federal investment for the project, wholly-owned by the Fort Nelson and Saulteau First Nations, to develop Canada’s first commercially viable geothermal electricity production facilities. ....

The First Nations Clean Energy Business Fund is a governmental
funding source for clean energy projects that promotes First
Nations participation in the clean energy sector within
asserted traditional territories and treaty areas in British
Columbia.
The program regularly accepts new applications with January 31
and May 31 as the closing dates each year.
The next intake
deadline is January 31, 2021.
The
Clean Energy Act (SBC 2010, c 22) enabled the fund
and British Columbia s Ministry of Indigenous Relations and
Reconciliation administers the fund.
