COVID: Winter Haven officials, churches work to vaccinate Black communities


WINTER HAVEN  The collaborative efforts of Winter Haven officials, Black church leaders and a locally owned pharmacy led to more than 200 people getting their first COVID vaccine on Thursday. 
I m so excited. What a blessing, Gail Van Allen, 64, of Winter Haven, shouted from her car. 
It s one of many smaller PODS, or points of dispensing, the group has put together in an attempt to get vaccines to those communities hardest hit by the pandemic  the Black community, the elderly and those at high-risk because of medical conditions. 
You have to deal with the misnomer that many people in the Black community do not want to take the shot. That s not all together true, said the Rev. Clifton Dollison of Winter Haven s First Missionary Baptist Church.  ....

This is the story of two Baptist churches one Black and one white. It’s the story of a friendship that started with a funeral and continued for 36 years.
In 1985, a white family at First Baptist Church on Governors Drive asked a Black pastor at First Missionary Baptist on Blue Springs Road to join their pastor and conduct a funeral for one of their members. He said yes. What happened after that was the linking of two prominent churches, two prominent pastors, and the beginning of a partnership. ....
