Here's what the budget did to get Australians into homes (hint: not much)

Among the bolder claims in last month’s budget was that “under the Coalition, home ownership will always be supported”.
Since the Howard government took office in 1996, the proportion of Australian households owning the home they live in has fallen from 70% to 66%.
The proportion having paid off their mortgage has fallen from 40% to 30%.
The proportion renting privately has climbed from 20% to 27%.
In the lead up to the budget, home prices began climbing again, soaring 8.5% in Melbourne and 11% in Sydney.
The response was a series of measures designed to look as if they would help people buy their own homes.

In a bid to win votes, the Tasmanian government has committed to increasing the First Home Owners Grant once re-elected.
Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein has announced an additional $10,000 to the First Home Owners Grant (FHOG) should a majority Liberal government be re-elected in the upcoming May election.
This would boost the total value of the grant to $30,000.
Mr Gutwein said that the grant will also be backdated to align with the federal government’s latest extension of the HomeBuilder scheme.
“This will have positive flow-on effects for Tasmania’s booming building and construction industry, creating more work and more jobs, especially following the end of the HomeBuilder grants,” the Premier said. ....

First home owners boost puts more in pockets of tasmanians
The Property Council welcomes today’s major announcement by the Tasmanian Liberal Party to boost the First Home Owners Grant from $20,000 to $30,000 until 30 June 2022 if re-elected.
Tasmanian Executive Director Rebecca Ellston applauded the policy and said increasing the grant to $30,000 will deliver a boost to the construction industry, and supercharge the capacity of younger Tasmanians trying to break into the housing market.
“We know that younger Tasmanians in particular are facing big challenges in entering the housing market with the median dwelling value in Tasmania rising 12.5 per cent over the past 12 months alone. An increase to the First Home Owners Grant will go a long way in helping first home owners secure a home.” ....
