Library CEO receives certificate in dementia friendly communities training

Sandra Barnes of the Alzheimer Society, Hastings Prince Edward, recently presented CEO and head librarian of the North Hastings Public Library, Kim McMunn, was with a Certificate of Participation for the Dementia Friendly Communities and Finding Your Way Training. Event coordinator at NHPL, Natalie Phillips, also completed the pilot project.
According to online resources at https://alzheimer.ca/hpe/en/home, by the end of this decade it is anticipated that there will be almost one million people in Canada living with dementia. This is why training in building a dementia-friendly Canada is so important. The Dementia-Friendly Canada project is using a “person-first” approach to ensure all Canadians living with dementia feel valued and empowered, ensure all organizations are inclusive and accessible and that through awareness of dementia, changes can be made individually and as a society. ....

Penarth Marie Curie shop take action to become 'dementia friendly'

This work is based on a partnership between Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Cardiff Council, Vale Council and Alzheimer’s Society Cymru.
Neil Lias, Area Manager of the Marie Curie charity shops based in Wales, said: “I’m really proud to be able to say that we have now gained ‘Working to become Dementia Friendly recognition’ across all of stores in Wales.
It was such an eye-opening process and a real learning experience for us all.
It has given us another opportunity to really integrate our stores within the local community, helped by our increased understanding of the needs of our customers who are living with dementia - and of how we can support them when using our services. ....

Darlington's Mayor teams up with world's oldest Burns club to raise money for charities

THE MAYOR of a North-East town is teaming up with the world’s oldest Burns club to stage a fundraising event in honour of Scotland’s famous national poet.
Darlington’s Mayor, Councillor Chris McEwan, was born in Greenock, on the Scottish coast, on Christmas Day, in 1965, and although he left the town when he was only six-weeks-old, he has always retained an affinity with the town.
Now Councillor McEwan has forged an innovative link with Greenock Burns Club – known as The Mother Club – to raise money for charities close to his heart.
He will be staging a virtual Burns Supper event on Saturday, January 23, with speeches, poems, singing, and the piping in of the haggis, all being relayed by Zoom from Greenock 200 miles away. ....
