New crane raises bar at Townsville Port


JOINT STATEMENT
The loading and unloading of container vessels at the Port of Townsville has been supercharged with the official commissioning of a new $30 million Berth 4 Crane and Cargo Terminal.
The Terminal’s completion has been marked by the debut of the Port’s new Liebherr Post Panamax Ship-to-Shore crane.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the crane will comfortably double the operational speeds of its predecessor.
“The new Crane and Cargo Terminal is able to unload vessels at a rate of 35 twenty-foot equivalent containers per hour,” Mr Bailey said.
“Combined with the $40.7 million Berth 4 wharf upgrade completed in 2018, it’s more than doubled the berth’s overall handling capacity. ....

Townsville households to take part in FOGO trial
Around 1,500 households in Idalia, Burdell, Heatley, and Vincent will be taking part in a trial of dedicated food organics and garden organics (FOGO) bins as part of Townsville City Council’s efforts to reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfill.
Mayor Jenny Hill said the roll-out of food organics and garden organics bins was a measure to address requirements of the Australian Government’s National Waste Policy and the Queensland Government’s Waste Management and Recovery Strategy.
“As a local government, we have to ensure our processes align with the policies and strategies implemented by the Federal and State Government, and in this instance, this is meeting the requirements for reducing waste to landfill,” Cr Hill said. ....

Queenslanders living in the state’s north will soon have access to lifesaving kidney transplant services closer to home with the expansion of the Statewide Kidney Transplant Service.

Jobs and growth to flow from Queensland manufacturing first

An essential high-tech water treatment product will soon be manufactured in Queensland for the first time through a partnership between a Townsville-based manufacturer and the Palaszczuk Government.
Treasurer and Minister for Investment Cameron Dick said Townsville industrial chemical producer Cleveland Bay Chemical Company (CBCC) will manufacture the reagent with support from the government’s $50 million Essential Goods and Supply Chain Program, removing Queensland’s reliance on products from interstate and overseas.
“A key element of Queensland’s COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan is the strengthening of our manufacturing capability,” the Treasurer said.
“COVID-19 has taught us the importance of sovereign manufacturing capability. ....
