One Million Evacuated as New Cyclone Nears Covid-Ravaged India By Pratik Parija and Pradipta Mukherjee | May 25, 2021 A powerful cyclone is set to slam into India early on Wednesday, the second in less than two weeks, with authorities evacuating more than one million people at a time when the nation is facing the world’s worst outbreak of Covid-19. Cyclone Yaas, equivalent to a category 3 hurricane, will cause heavy rains in the eastern states of West Bengal and Odisha, with wind speeds as high as 185 kilometers (115 miles) per hour, according to the India Meteorological Department. Sea levels may increase four meters above regular tides and inundate low-lying areas, it said.

The incessant rainfall has led to several roads and low-lying areas becoming water-logged. The inhabitants of a rehabilitation colony with a population of around 4,000 at Bagapatia under the Rajnagar block of Kendrapada district have been the worst-hit. “Last year, the district administration had promised to build concrete roads in our colony to prevent water-logging problems, but nothing has been done so far. Water has gushed into several houses,” Sudrashan Rout of Bagapatia said. Residents of Musadiha, Dalesahi, Balisahi, Lokanathapada and Joribala near the Paradip port with a combined population of 9,000 are facing flood-like situation.

On 11 May 2021Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) has commenced the Maintenance Dredging at Approach Channel, Entrance Channel, Turning Circle, Docks, Mahanadi & Sand Trap of Paradip Port Trust, Paradip, Odisha for the year 2021-22 on 11 May 2021. As per contract DCI will be dredging a quantity of 7 Million M3 by deploying DCI TSHD Dredge-XX & and DCI Dredge-XVII for the period May'21 to mid March'22 at a total contract cost of Rs.98 crore. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), India’s biggest private port operator, spent ₹11,753 crore in equity to buy Krishnapatnam and Gangavaram ports. APSEZ paid ₹6,195 crore for a 100 per cent stake in Krishnaptanam Port Co Ltd (KPCL) which handled 38 million tonnes (mt) of cargo in F21, earning ₹1,840 crore with an EBITDA of ₹1,325 crore.
