Vinton to borrow $4.3 million for water, sewer upgrades


Vinton plans to borrow $4.3 million to complete water and sewer upgrades, resulting in modest rate hikes for its more than 5,000 utility customers in eastern Roanoke County.
Two large projects, one each for sewer and water, require $4 million to fund, with a third, smaller project also identified for completion in the near future, after the town council approves measures to borrow the money, said Vinton Town Manager Pete Peters.
For a bit more than $2 million, Vinton is converting its more than 4,500 residential and 525 commercial customers to remote-read water meters.
“That’s not only the meter itself in the ground, but in some cases, meter boxes, the antennas — all the infrastructure that would actually collect that data, and then communicate it back to our office,” Peters said. “Then there’s some software on the back end.” ....

Our view: Park improvements are always welcome news


One of the underappreciated gems of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County is our extensive system of parks, full of trees, water and amenities such as developed trails, picnic shelters and sports courts. Free to enter, they make life richer for residents and likely attract visitors from nearby communities.
They also serve as selling points to transplants from other areas of the country and world. Especially in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, they provide needed space for recreation and relief to people who otherwise might feel they have no place to go.
So we’re always glad to learn about improvements that make our parks more accessible and appealing. ....

Improving the East Verde River


I love stream improvements. Some are quite simple in design, while others require a great deal of work to install. They are all helpful for fish and fishers.
Trout benefit from these structures as they improve conditions in streams. Sometimes their purpose is to narrow the creek to increase depth, while other improvements provide cover, or enhance poor habitat.
The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) has installed stream improvements on several Rim Country streams over the years, so I am always on the lookout for them when fishing. I know these structures are a great attractor for fish, so I spend extra time fishing around them. If I am not careful in my approach, they are also the first place that trout will swim to seek cover if they have been cruising in the open water nearby. ....

Ashland will see $4.4 million improvements on Route 63


ASHLAND - The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission approved intersection improvements for Route 63 in Ashland on Wednesday. 
The planned improvements will be between the junctions of Route Y/Route M and Route H. MHTC awarded the project to S & A Equipment & Builders, LLC, for $4,418,755.87. 
According to an emailed press release sent by MoDOT, the project will consist of removing crossovers and improving intersections at Minor Hill/Angel Lane, New Salem Lane/Martin Lane and Loy Martin Road. 
The improvements are scheduled to start in the spring and be finished around December of 2021. Lane closures will be required during the work hours. MoDOT will alert drivers when work season is set to begin.  ....
