‘5 Spot’ lifted onto new rails at Pioneer Park

Just in time for the summer opening of the Pioneer Park Historical Complex, a large and popular feature was set atop a new foundation.
Engine 5, otherwise known as ‘5 Spot,’ has sat in front of the Railroad Museum Depot building inside the PPHC since 1973. Over the years, the narrow gauge steam engine and its foundation had begun to sink. Last fall a fundraising effort began to pay for the work necessary to get the train back on solid ground.
Early in May a new reinforced concrete foundation was poured and the rails were set last week. This past Thursday a crane service lifted the engine onto its new rails and the remaining train cars into place behind it. ....

Chamber prepares to host city-wide celebration

The month of May is part of what people in the tourism industry call the “shoulder” season. Snowmobile and ski season is over and summer has yet to begin. To add a little flair to this shoulder month, staff at the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce is introducing Hodag Heritage Days, May 17-21. The week will feature Hodag-themed art contests, scavenger hunts, decoration contests, Hodag food and beverages, culminating with a designation ceremony and a “parked parade.”
Pioneer Park Historical Complex and the Hodag Store are partnering with the chamber on this first-of-its-kind event.
“We really want to give people a reason to celebrate, to appreciate each other and our heritage,” said chamber events and program coordinator Rachel Boehlen. “We are providing a mix of in-person activities and virtual activities along with focusing on our local business partners. We encourage everyone to join in; this event is for you!” ....

Rhinelander to Celebrate Hodag, History, and Community with Hodag Heritage Days

Boehlen says the idea for the event has been in the works for years.
The Chamber wanted to hold it last year, but like most things, it got pushed back because of the pandemic.
Now, the Hodag Heritage Days will be a celebration of the city’s history and its people.
“We are so proud of how our community has responded to everything going on in the last year, year and a half,” she said.
The Chamber along with Pioneer Park Historical Complex and the Hodag Store are hosting a series of events the week of May 17th.
There will be scavenger hunts, art contests, bike rides, a parked parade, and a Hodag Day Designation Ceremony. ....

Nestled in woods just outside of Ashland, Wisconsin is the Swan and Sons Boat Works. For the last 20 years Josh Swan has been making and restoring wooden boats. Most wooden boat makers get started because of their love for sailing, paddling or rowing, but Swan got into it because he so appreciated the craftmanship and the challenges that come with wooden boat construction.

“I immediately fell in love with building and working on wooden boats. The rules, the discipline and logic. Curves look very mysterious and are really challenging. I would much rather be building something that has shape and complex curves then say cabinets or things with lots of angles.” ....
