Training event held for rehabilitation of young prisoners after release

The Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC) on Thursday organised a comprehensive training session for the probation and parole staff and other relevant government officials for providing support to young people in prisons and under probation in Sindh.
Speaking to the participants, Dr Muhammad Usman Chachar, the Sindh home department additional chief secretary, said the provincial government had been taking proactive steps to improve the criminal justice system and implement the laws.
“It is highly appreciable that the need is being realised for capacity building of probation staff and other linked departments to improve support for youth in conflict with law,” he said. Abdul Kabir Kazi, the Sindh Education Foundation (SEF) managing director, said the provincial government was committed to uplifting and empowering the youth. ....

'Children biggest victims of Covid-19 pandemic' - Pakistan

KARACHI: Speakers at a discussion held in connection with International Human Rights Day at a local hotel on Wednesday said that the Covid-19 pandemic had a profound impact on children’s well-being, and there was an immediate need for the government to take steps to address their needs in the light of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
The event was organised by the Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (Sparc). Speaking about government efforts for children’s uplift, Special Assistant to Chief Minister of Sindh on Human Rights Veerji Kolhi said approximately 47 per cent of Pakistan’s total population comprised children under the age of 18. ....

Call for greater investment in children in light of UN conventions, Covid-19

Child rights experts and parliamentarians at an event marking International Human Rights Day on Wednesday stressed the need for increased investment in children in light of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and Covid19 pandemic.
The Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC) organised the event at a local hotel. Veerji Kolhi, special assistant to chief minister of Sindh on human rights, said 47 per cent of Pakistan’s population comprised children under the age of 18. “The Sindh government is committed to uplifting the status of children,” he said.
He mentioned that Pakistan ratified the UNCRC in November 1990, but only 24 per cent of the laws in Pakistan were in compliance with its requirements. “Bringing these legislations in conformity with the UNCRC and their effective implementation are a key priority for the government,” he said. ....
