Hero father saves three-year-old girl from drowning

A father has been hailed a hero after he jumped off a bridge and walked across razor-sharp oyster beds to save a three-year-old girl from drowning.
Father-of-two Scott Windon was enjoying a day out with his family at Birchgrove, in Sydney s inner-west, on January 23 when toddler Mia Bullimore tumbled off a three metre ledge into water below.
Without hesitation, Mr Windon lowered himself onto the nearby rocks littered with sharp rock oysters at Mort Bay Park to save the unknown toddler.
The hero dad managed to scoop up the Mia before she completely submerged under the water.

Coronavirus lockdown contributes to horror drowning death season in Australia

Australia has experienced a spike in drowning deaths in the summer of 2020/2021 after fitness levels plunged during Covid lockdowns, a top lifesaver has warned.
At least 55 people have died as a result of drowning this summer alone, compared to just 43 at this time last year.
According to Liam Krige, the general manager at Life Saving Victoria, the staggering amount of drowning deaths this season is done to dwindling fitness and a blase attitude to the dangers.
The sad reality is that people think it s not going to happen to them, or that they don t need to worry about it, Mr Krige told The Age. ....

Authorities are urging people to be careful on the water after a spate of drownings in Victoria and New South Wales.
The warning comes as a heatwave in south-east Australia sees residents looking for respite in the water.
Seven people have died in Victorian waterways in the past 10 days alone, while several others have drowned in NSW.
In Victoria on Saturday two people died in separate incidents.
In the first incident, a small vessel carrying two men overturned at Anglesea, roughly 100km south-west of Melbourne, along Victoria s Surf Coast. ....

Authorities have urged people to stay safe in the water over the long weekend amid fears the number of lives lost in our waterways this summer could climb following a spate of drownings.
The warning comes after a horror month marred by drownings including the death of 15-year-old Riing Doar, who died while swimming in a rocky waterhole at Kentlyn on Wednesday.
