It’s no secret that transportation is the largest source of carbon emissions in the United States. So it’s not surprising that, besides promoting the use of public transit, biking and walking, cities are also embracing electric vehicles (EVs) in their quest to cut carbon emissions. But some are thinking outside of the box: In addition to electrifying municipal fleets, many cities participating in the Bloomberg Philanthropies American Cities Climate Challenge are also engaging with community and industry partners to support electrified options that don’t require owning your own EV, such as car sharing which has been demonstrated to reduce car ownership amongst users. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the start of construction on a $17 million affordable housing development that will offer 46 affordable homes for seniors in Buffalo. Known as La Plaza de Virginia, the development will also include a community senior service center and café. The developer is Hispanos Unidos de Buffalo, a nonprofit organization that provides integrated social services to underserved communities in the Buffalo area. La Plaza de Virginia is part of Governor Cuomo s unprecedented $20 billion, five-year affordable Housing Plan. ....

Seniors' Center to resume slow return to in-person activities in January

As the new year approaches, the Riley County Seniors Service Center is optimistic as it slowly and safely begins a return to some in person activities.
Director Jami Ramsey was excited to announce recently that starting in January, the center will reopen its dining room to 20 guests at a time, requiring a reservation and signing in along with temperature checks.
“Because our dining room is fairly large, we’re able to spread everybody. But it doesn’t feel cold. They can see other folks and there can at least be some feeling of engaging in some socialization,” she said. ....
