$5 million to expand Williams Adult Care Center proposed in N.C. House bill


Bipartisan legislation introduced Monday by the Forsyth County House delegation would provide $5 million to expand arts and wellness services at the Elizabeth and Tab Williams Adult Care Center.
House Bill 593 would provide Senior Services Inc. with $3 million from the 2021-22 state budget and an additional $2 million from the 2022-23 budget.
The Williams center services local residents who are living with Alzheimer s and other forms of dementia.
The goal is building a new and expanded center that will bring health, wellness, arts and intergenerational program partners under one roof. The dedicated space would go from 10,000 to 15,000 square feet.
The current center is at 2895 Shorefair Drive in Winston-Salem. The new building would be on the same campus. ....

Read Write Spell needs volunteers to serve as tutors to public-school students. Training, support and all of the tools necessary for success are provided.

The AgingWell Series will be presented from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday via Zoom. The series is sponsored by the Wake Forest Baptist Health, Sticht Center for Healthy Aging and Alzheimer’s Prevention.

REGULAR MEETING
Call to Order: Mayor Richard McKay called the Regular Meeting of the Hay Springs City Council to order at 7:00 p.m. Council persons Keith Kearns, Luke Marcy, Marvin Blundell and Brant Buettner were present. Attorney Jamian Simmons was present. It was noted that the Open Meetings Act is posted.
Minutes Approval: Marcy made motion, Buettner seconded to approve the Minutes from February 9th, 2021 Regular Council Meeting. Marcy, Blundell and Buettner voted aye. Kearns abstained. Motion carried. 
Agenda Approval: Kearns made motion, Blundell seconded to approve the agenda for March 9th, 2021 Regular Council Meeting. All voted aye. Motion carried. ....

Answer: Forsyth County does have an AmeriCorps Seniors program. We reached out to Patricia Gilliam the retired and senior volunteer program (RSVP) director for more information. She shared the following:
AmeriCorps Seniors, formerly “Senior Corps,” is a network of national service programs for Americans 55 years and older and is made up of three primary programs — Foster Grandparents Program (FGP), Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Senior Companion Program (SCP). Each program takes a different approach to improving lives and fostering civic engagement. AmeriCorps volunteers commit their time to address critical community needs including academic tutoring and mentoring, elderly care and disaster relief support, just to name a few. ....
