Sen. Inhofe Leads Bill to Hold Ligado Responsible for Costs to Mitigate GPS Interference

A bipartisan bill introduced in the Senate on Tuesday would hold
Ligado Networks responsible for costs to mitigate all potential GPS interference, not just that associated with government systems, as a result of the company’s plan to build a new commercial L-band network for 5G infrastructure.
Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, is leading the measure. This builds on his previous opposition to the
FCC’s decision last year to approve Ligado’s network plan, citing concerns it will place undue risk on GPS reliability.
“GPS and satellite communications don’t only impact our military we rely on it for so much of our day to day lives, which is why we need to take steps to protect not just the federal government from the harmful decision, but all state and local governments, private entities and consumers too,” Inhofe said in a statement. “When Ligado’s effort to repurpose spectrum causes i ....

What is the Best Network Type for Your Critical IoT Operations?

What is the Best Network Type for Your Critical IoT Operations?
By Nick Koiza
Tuesday, May 18, 2021 | Comments
Several technology options exist for deploying IoT solutions focused on critical needs. These principally fall into two low-power wide area (LPWA) network classifications: licensed 4G and 5G cellular, and non-cellular LPWA.
The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has defined cellular LPWA network standards offering various IoT approaches. In the case of 4G, connectivity choices include narrownand IoT (NB-IoT) and LTE-M, while 5G promises New Radio IoT (NR-IoT). Commonly adopted technologies in the non-cellular category include Sigfox and LoRa. It is necessary for user organisations to assess key drivers and operational requirements before deciding on cellular or non-cellular networks. ....

USDOT begins investigation of potential of 5G for V2X | Traffic Technology Today

The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) has issued a Sources Sought Notice for any organizations capable of providing services, resources, and/or facilities for testing emerging and future 5G new radio communications technologies for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) applications.
The move comes against the backdrop of last year’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ruling that not only would spectrum available for V2X in the 5.9GHz spectrum be more than halved, but DSRC would be phased out in favor of C-V2X (cellular-based vehicle-to-everything communications).
Part of the draft solicitation states: “As fifth generation (5G) new radio specifications are now becoming available and chipsets are anticipated to be in development, USDOT recognizes that the new radio technology and 5G architecture may offer transportation a wide range of opportunities that may advance current communications capabilities. ....

An Update of Public-Safety LTE Deployment Efforts Around Europe

An Update of Public-Safety LTE Deployment Efforts Around Europe
Monday, March 08, 2021 | Comments
Countries around Europe find themselves in different stages in the process of deploying public-safety LTE capabilities. Officials from five European countries offered an update on their progress in deploying the capabilities during a webinar hosted by TCCA.
Belgium
In Belgium, the Astrid TETRA network provides voice services to public protection and disaster relief (PPDR), and in 2014, added data communications for its users through the Blue Light Mobile service. However, the Blue Light Mobile service is still a limited data solution as it does not meet mission-critical requirements.
In 2015, Astrid had to decide what it wanted to with the network moving forward because of its place in the equipment lifecycle, said Christoph Gregoire, director of technology and operations at Astrid. At that point, LTE and other new technologies were not mature so the operator ch ....
