The award is named for Michael J. Petrides, a Staten Island educator who died in 1994.
Borough President James Oddo and members of the Petrides family and scholarship committee presented the award to Amy Mohamed.
The annual honor is given to a graduating high school senior who excels in math and science. Lacey DeLucia from Staten Island Technical High School was named first runner-up. Thea Akhrass from St. Joseph Hill Academy High School was named second runner-up. ....

STATEN ISLSND, N.Y. By his hospital bedside, a friend played Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” just before Michael Halpern died on July 30, 2019, said his wife, Valerie Halpern.
He died at age 71 at peace with the fact that Staten Island Day Camp, which he created in 1979, hit its 40-year mark, and he was there to celebrate it, she said.
“Mike was so wonderful with the kids. He was a ‘big kid’ himself,” recalled his wife. “He touched so many lives.”
But he never could have foreseen the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and how it would impact his day camp, which his wife had intended to continue as part of his legacy. ....

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. When schools began to shutter across New York City in March in an effort to stem the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), St. Joseph Hill Academy in Arrochar knew it would need to adapt to ensure its elementary and high school students continued to learn.
While students were able to log on for remote learning in the spring, the 2020-2021 school year would see students returning to their classroom for blended in-person learning. And elementary school Principal Lawrence Hansen and high school Principal Maria Molluzzo said they knew they wanted students who were learning remotely from home to get the same experience as those learning in-person. ....
