Sen. Larry Allen, R-Winfield, was elected as the senate majority leader Wednesday at the Statehouse.
Republican members of the Kansas Senate voted to select Sen. Larry Alley as their majority leader Wednesday, marking the end of a tumultuous session for the chamber.
The move comes after lawmakers moved earlier this year to remove Sen. Gene Suellentrop, R-Wichita, from the leadership post after he was charged with felony eluding police and driving under the influence, among other offenses.
Suellentrop was stopped and arrested in the early morning hours of March 16 after allegedly driving the wrong way on Interstate 470 and then I-70 for upward of 10 minutes. ....

Whereas before such requests for emergency extensions happened under the State Finance Council, in which the governor chaired over GOP legislative leaders, they now will happen solely under the jurisdiction of the Legislative Coordinating Council, comprised of only legislative leaders. ....

A Shawnee County judge struck down Wednesday a 2015 law restricting some types of abortion as unconstitutional and unenforceable, citing a controversial Kansas Supreme Court ruling upholding abortion rights in the state.
The state has been unable to enforce a law limiting dilation and evacuation procedures a common option for second-trimester abortions since 2019.
That s when the state s highest court found Kansans have a fundamental right to an abortion under the state constitution, a landmark ruling which pro-life advocates have aimed to undo ever since. ....
