ThisWeek group
Later in June, the police division expects to finalize department policies for using body cameras, and officers are on pace to begin wearing them in the field by the end of this year.
On May 10, Upper Arlington City Council unanimously approved a $282,992 contract with WatchGuard Video for the purchase of 45 body-worn cameras for officers and 18 cruiser cameras.
Next, officer Bryan McKean said, will be the finalization of policies for how the cameras will be used by officers. Those guidelines are being developed through negotiations with Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge No. 9, which brokers collective-bargaining agreements for the Upper Arlington officers. ....

The List: Reasons Columbus police aren’t getting vaccinated today
A recent article in the Washington Post reported that only 28 percent of Columbus police officers had received at least one shot. We thought we’d take some guesses as to why.
Washington Post article documenting the national phenomenon of police spurning the COVID-19 vaccine, the paper revealed that just 28 percent of the Columbus Division of Police had reported receiving at least one shot, among the lowest uptakes for any of the included major cities. (Only Phoenix, at 23 percent, clocked a lower vaccination rate.)
The paper noted the potential dangers of this vaccine hesitancy, since police are often engaged in high-contact encounters, making officers potential vectors of spread to vulnerable populations during traffic stops, calls to homes and other similar interactions with the public. ....

As Columbus Democrat-controlled government remains locked in a pitched battle over whether the city s police union can influence the way officer-involved shootings and allegations of misconduct are investigated and discipline is carried out, it was their own party that gave the union its current power.
And since the mid-1980s, when Ohio instituted a sea change in public sector collective-bargaining laws, police unions have gradually shifted to the right on issues like gun control, concealed carry and availability of assault weapons  even as police are increasingly called upon to face off against sometimes heavily armed protestors at emotionally charged political rallies. ....

Franklin County prosecutor doubts self-defense claims in shootings

One week into his term as Franklin County s new prosecutor, Gary Tyack is considering whether his office should take back handling any case involving a former Columbus police officer who was fired within days of fatally shooting an unarmed Black man.
I think for years and years, some police have felt they had immunity as long as they told a story about how they shot someone in self-defense, said Tyack, a Democrat who defeated longtime Republican incumbent prosecutor Ron O Brien in the November election.
That s what you hear about the cases pending now, Tyack said. The claim is, What I did was in self-defense. You know, His hand wasn t visible to me, and his hand had a cellphone in it, but since I couldn t see one of his hands, I decided he was armed and therefore I needed to shoot. I m sorry, we can t let officers keep getting away with that. ....
