"Summer Of Play" Initiative Announced To Encourage Children To Enjoy Outdoors

The government has announced the Summer of Play initiative to support and encourage children and their families to get outside and play as restrictions ease in the coming months.
The initiative will see grants, supports and information resources rolled out over the summer months. All 31 Local Authorities will benefit from funding for 52 projects under the Capital Grant Scheme in 2021. The application process was open to all Local Authorities, each Local Authority could apply for up to three separate projects; with funding being capped at €30k for each Local Authority.  The projects funded encompass a wide range of initiatives that will deliver diverse benefits to children and young people and have a positive impact on communities. They include projects such as sensory gardens, learn to cycle tracks, and natural play trails. ....

Kendall to lead review into NI agri-food sector

An independent review into the future of the agri-food sector in Northern Ireland is to be led by Sir Peter Kendall, the former president of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU).
The appointment was confirmed by Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots and Economy Minister Dianne Dodds on Friday.
In February, the
Irish Farmers Journal revealed that a review into the need for a capital grant scheme for food processing businesses in NI was to be conducted.
Other issues
The new independent strategic review of the NI agri-food sector (ISRAF) will also look other issues facing the sector, such as economic and environmental sustainability, access to migrant labour, market opportunities and the case for regional branding. ....

Westport get €1million towards Croke Park-sized pitch

Westport GAA have received a donation of €500,000 for development work, with the promise of a further €500,000 in the future.
The donation has been given by local supporters, the Kenny family.
The first €500,000 sum is earmarked for the club s new pitch development on the Golf Course Road in Westport.
Westport GAA have submitted a planning application to the council for the construction of a Croke Park-size football pitch with four sets of changing rooms, a 250-seater stand, floodlights, and a clubhouse to be located on the site. It is hoped work will commence on the project in June. ....

The outgoing president of NFU Scotland (NFUS) has urged the Scottish Government to develop a future policy roadmap for the sector.
Dumfries farmer Andrew McCornick also urged government not to “rob Peter to pay Paul” when developing future farm support schemes.
Mr McCornick made the comments in his final address as president at the union’s virtual conference yesterday. He is set to be replaced in the role by Aberfeldy farmer and current vice-president Martin Kennedy at virtual NFU Scotland elections today. ....
