NIU receives $8 9 million in state funds for capital projects

Northern Star DeKALB – NIU received $8.9 million in April for structural repairs by the Illinois Capital Development Board. The money will be used towards repairs, exterior improvements and roof replacements.  The main areas of concern involve the replacement of the roof on the Swen Parson building and repairing water infiltration and cracks in the walls of the College of Visual and Performing Arts building, said John Heckmann, associate vice president for Facilities Management and Campus Services.  “Having a building that we can have confidence in that it will be watertight and continue to support the classes and other activities in the buildings is important and that’s what these repair projects are going to allow us to do,” Heckmann said.

WIU Celebrates Performing Arts Center Project

/ Macomb, IL – The start of construction is still months away, but Western Illinois University nonetheless broke ground on Tuesday, April 26 for its Performing Arts Center. President Al Goldfarb, who received a standing ovation before he spoke during the ceremony, said it s taken a long time for the project to reach this point. I ve seen drawings that go back to the 1970s. So it is amazing how long this project has taken, Goldfarb said. Goldfarb thanked former WIU administrator Tate Lindahl, who is providing a major contribution to help maintain the building. Tate has committed a very significant, seven-figure bequest that will underwrite the maintenance of the Performing Arts Center, Goldfarb said. It is a remarkable bequest and it is a remarkable commitment to this facility.
