Former Los Lunas Schools Board of Education member assumes interim role; PED secretary seeks nominations for additional designees


A former Los Lunas Board of Education member has been named as the public education secretary’s first designee to assume temporary governance of the Los Lunas Schools district.
New Mexico Public Education Secretary Ryan Stewart announced Sonya C’Moya as his first designee today, Friday, May 28, in a press release.
In the same press release, Stewart called for applications for additional designees for the other four districts. C’Moya will represent District 2.
On Wednesday, May 26,
Stewart indefinitely suspended the district’s five-member elected board due to what PED described as “credible evidence” that certain board members have persistently violated procurement and public access laws, the state Public School Code and professional ethical standards. ....

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. The pandemic has exposed the inadequate water infrastructure and internet access in New Mexico’s tribal communities. But the public health crisis has also sparked an influx of federal funds and local projects to connect more residents to clean water and the internet.

Yazzie-Martinez plaintiffs want court to order state to address remote learning issues


All schools in New Mexico will remain closed through the remainder of the academic year.
The plaintiffs in a lawsuit over educational resources in New Mexico filed a request with the First Judicial District Court on Wednesday to order the state to provide computers and high-speed internet access to thousands of at risk students who lack tools for remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
An estimated 23 percent of the New Mexico population lacks broadband internet service, according to the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty (NMCLP). The nonprofit, which is providing legal counsel to the plaintiffs of the Yazzie-Martinez lawsuit, estimated that 80 percent of Native Americans living on tribal lands do not have internet services at all. ....
