If government were mechanics, their solution to an overheating car would be to tell you never to drive it, instead of fixing the radiator.

Goody gumdrops! Those of us who get to live, get to live the new South African dream of yet again being smacked by some regulations aimed at halting the spread of Covid-19. The first time was apparently to prepare the health facilities with ambo-bikes. The second time was to stop new year s parties since December, Christmas and Matric Rage might have exhausted the country’s liquor supply. Now we have a third wave inbound, which we’ve been warned about for months, so naturally, let’s talk about upping the restrictions. You have to be grateful the people in charge of the country. ....

Third wave: Experts reveal what will cause SA's next 'superspreader event'

It’s a question of ‘when’, rather than ‘if’, as we assess the potential third wave of COVID-19 in South Africa. A slow vaccine rollout, compounded by the onset of winter, is likely to fuel a resurgence in new infections. One of the key drivers for a spike in transmission are superspreader events – and experts believe they know what’ll cause the next one.
What is a superspreader event?
It’s the term given to a situation or gathering that can help COVID-19 spread like wildfire. Indoor venues with big crowds, over-capacity parties, and any gathering that packs a high-density of people into a smaller space are usually where superspreader events are traced to. ....

Concerns over move to level 1 and relaxed alcohol regulations just before holidays

Concerns over move to level 1 and relaxed alcohol regulations just before holidays

Johannesburg - The Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance SA (SaapaSA) said it was concerned government was moving “too far too quickly” by taking the country to lockdown level 1.
The organisation said it was worried South Africa was entering a period of public holidays: Human Rights Day on March 21, four days of Easter in the first week of April, Freedom Day on April 27 and Workers’ Day on 1 May.
With regulations around alcohol sales also relaxed, Saapa SA said this might not bode well for the country.
“Public holidays are known to be times that people drink a lot. In addition, there will be a lot of traffic on the road over Easter as people go on holiday and travel to church services. ....

Johannesburg - An investigation by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) found that at least two attendees of the superspreader Matric Rage festival in Durban, knowingly attended parties despite testing positive for Covid-19.
The NICD’s monthly communique for January 2021, revealed that the two had tested positive for the Covid-19 virus in mid-November, with their specimen collected on November 17 and 19, respectively.
In December, it was confirmed that the 2020 Matric Rage Festival in KwaZulu-Natal, which had been held between November 28 and December 4, had become a Covid-19 superspreader event. ....

Attorney Maushami Chetty says knowingly attending a party with Covid-19 and partygoers then contracting the virus is an offence.
National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) released a report of findings into the Matric Rage events that took place in early December 2020.
Data collected from questionnaires and sample mapping of tests conducted confirms that some post-matric parties were super spreader events, reports Lester Kiewit.
The report also states that two of the partygoers attended the KZN events with the knowledge that they already had Covid-19. 848 people at the same event subsequently contracted the virus. ....
