NC House bill would give $750 million to connect counties to broadband.

A new bill filed in the N.C. House of Representatives would allocate more than $750 million to connect Craven and other counties throughout the state to broadband internet access. The move comes as officials from New Bern and other cities have urged lawmakers to step up efforts to bring updated broadband service to eastern North Carolina.
Under House Bill 947, money allocated by the federal government under the American Rescue Plan would be used to increase broadband access throughout North Carolina. Under the newly established Completing Access to Broadband (CAB) program, the bill allocates $400 million in grants that would be made available to every county in the state to help close “broadband gaps.” ....

New Bern mayor signed letter asking legislators to address internet issues

The City of New Bern has taken additional steps to address what officials have described as the poor local broadband service and issues with internet provider Suddenlink.
A letter addressing the issue that was signed by New Bern Mayor Dana Outlaw and eight other mayors was sent to 14 eastern North Carolina legislators last week, including Sen. Norm Sanderson and Rep. Steve Tyson.
The letter urges the legislators to take “aggressive steps to bring better broadband service to our region of state,” including the passage of Senate Bill 547-FIBER NC Act. The bill authorizes counties and cities to build broadband service facilities or equipment for leasing purposes. ....

New high-speed internet fiber network to be built in Mason City

MASON CITY, Iowa – A deal has been reached with a company planning to bring high-speed internet fiber to Mason City.
The City Council on Tuesday night unanimously approved a letter agreement with Metro Fibernet, also known as MetroNet, to install fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) networks covering at least 85 percent of Mason City homes and businesses. MetroNet spokesman Joe Salerno told the Council the company would build the network at no cost to the city.
According to the letter agreement, MetroNet service to Mason City would include up to 240 television channels, phone and internet service, wireless home networking, and private branch exchange phone service to businesses. Salerno told the Council they want to make Mason City a “gigabit city” with “failure proof technology” that can increase capacity as internet speeds rise. ....

Dupaco Community Credit Union paid Hurd Waukee 2 LLC $1.3 million for property at 1090 E. Hickman Road in Waukee, Dallas County real estate records show. The property includes 1.76 acres of vacant commercial ground valued at $180,500. In November, the Dubuque-based credit union announced its plans to build the full-service learning lab branch in Waukee. The facility is expected to open in 2022. The transaction was recorded Dec. 7.
Forestar USA Real Estate Group Inc. based in Austin, Texas, paid Phillips Hamilton Inc. $1.78 million for 38 acres of agriculture land in Waukee, records show.
