TN Politics: A Week for Melting and Meltdowns

Political analyst Otis Sanford discusses the week in Tennessee Politics for Feb. 21-27, 2021.
As Memphians bundled up and stayed indoors last week during the winter storms, two other storms were a-brewing, as they say, in the public sphere. More than 2,000 unused COVID vaccine doses went into the garbage a major waste blamed on weather and miscommunication. In addition, the Shelby County Health Department ended up with a massive stockpile of more than 30,000 doses, that ran afoul of state policy. Details are still being uncovered, but political analyst Otis Sanford says calls for resignations are understandable.
MLGW also faced a crisis last week as wells and pumping stations broke down in the cold and more than a hundred water mains burst, along with thousands more pipes in homes and businesses. A mandated boil water advisory went into effect when water pressure dropped below a certain level. In the week it took to restore the system, MLGW worked to stave off rumors a ....

MEMPHIS, Tenn. After the frozen and burst pipes we have seen and heard of the past week, if you live in Memphis, you may be thinking about the letters you receive several times a year offering you pipe protection.
The City has a partnership with a company called HomeServe offering sewer and water pipe protection for your home.
Is it legit? Would it have covered damage from this most recent event?

On February 1, 1968, the streets of Memphis, Tennessee, flowed with rainwater. The downpour overwhelmed sewers, making it all but impossible for sanitation workers to perform their already grueling tasks. Two workers, Echol Cole and Robert Walker, sought shelter from the storm in the back of their garbage truck. When an electrical switch malfunctioned, they were crushed. Their tragic deaths sparked outrage, but when the Memphis Public Works department refused to compensate their families, the community had had enough. ....
