500 days to reform energy sector and halt load shedding crisis - the clock starts now

It s no secret that load shedding is pummelling economic growth prospects for South Africa. If the country is to find a way out of the current crisis, exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, five critical actions will have to be taken to reconfigure the energy sector, within a 500-day window, according to researchers.
Think tank Meridian Economics this week published a briefing note, prepared for the Capacity Building Programme for Employment Promotion Colloquium. KfW is offering up to 200 million euros ($244mn) in concessional loan finance.
The Germany government is aiming to spark development of green hydrogen in South Africa. This is in line with Germany’s strategy, which aims to secure new partners to drive the adoption of green hydrogen.
The bank has chosen Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Meridian Economics to provide advisory support in choosing potential targets. They will release a request for information (RFI) in June. ....

In a meeting of the portfolio committee on mineral resources and energy on Tuesday, MPs questioned why public outcry over the controversial powerships contract had been ignored.
The contract will lock South Africa into a 20-year deal for emergency electricity.
The meeting kicked off with the reading of two letters addressed to the committee’s chairperson, Sahlulele Luzipo. The letters, from civil society and environmental organisations, urged the committee to investigate the contract and asked that Parliament hold public hearings into the risk mitigation independent power producers procurement programme. ....
