Demand leads St. Pete Beach to suspend memorial bench program

ST. PETE BEACH — The city has been forced to suspend its memorial bench program after it became the victim of its own success and popularity.
Public Works Director Mike Clarke said over the years the program has been so successful that there are now 87 city-approved memorial benches on the beach, mostly in Pass-A-Grille.
“Bench spacing on the sand has become quite crowded and, for that reason, the program has been suspended,” Clarke reported. “However, Public Works continues to receive requests for consideration. The emotional attachment families have with the beach and loved ones who have passed is very evident.”
During a March 23 commission meeting, City Manager Alex Rey told commissioners that “while the city is still getting requests for memorial benches, all the possible places on the beach where a bench can be placed has been saturated.” ....

St Pete Beach faces lawsuit over staff's granting, then rescinding dock expansion permit | Beaches

ST. PETE BEACH — Owners of four lots at 2707 Pass A Grille Way have filed a lawsuit against the city that alleges a city commissioner exerted influence that caused staff to first approve, then reject their permit for a nearly $1 million dock expansion project after the work was completed.
In a lawsuit filed Feb. 18, the property owner asked the Sixth Judicial Circuit Court for “declaratory and injunctive relief with an underlying amount … that exceeds $30,000, exclusive of interest, costs, and attorneys fees.”
During the Feb. 23 City Commission meeting, City Attorney Andrew Dickman said “absolutely and unequivocally … political pressure just doesn’t happen.” He blamed the error, which caused the dock to initially be approved, on staff not realizing a restrictive covenant ran with the land and the application should have been denied or changed. ....

St. Pete Beach voted top beach destination in U.S., fifth in the world

ST. PETE BEACH — This beach city can claim some bragging rights after not only being voted the No. 1 beach destination in the United States by travelers using Tripadvisor, but also their fifth-most favorite beach in the world.
“Now the secret is out. We’ve always known we have the best beach, but now everyone else knows it,” said Mayor Al Johnson at a Feb. 23 ceremony on the beach, where the city received its Tripadvisor trophy in the shape of a surfboard. “It’s a great recognition for us, of course. We owe it all to the fact that we have such a wonderful place to visit, incredibly maintained by our city staff and all the directors of the different departments.” ....
