Linden Hall has made her own piece of Australian athletics history, becoming the first Australian woman to run under four minutes for 1500m in Melbourne on Thursday (1).
Running on her own for the last 700 metres at Melbourne’s Box Hill track, Hall kicked down from a 2:09 first 800 metres to a 3:59.67 finish. Genevieve Gregson was a distant second in 4:10.08, just ahead of Melissa Duncan’s 4:10.40, but it was the race against the clock which counted most.
In winning, Hall regained the Australian record from her World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 teammate Jessica Hull, but she also beat Hull to the accolade of being the first Australian to run under four minutes. ....

When Sally Pearson abruptly announced her retirement last August, it seemed Australian women’s hurdling would be waiting some time for another athlete capable of reaching global championship finals.
Turns out the wait may not be so long at all. The next contender had been there all along, hiding in plain sight.
Liz Clay had drawn some attention to herself when she ran 12.94 to win at the Melbourne Track Classic earlier in 2020. A 2021 season opener of 12.84 in Brisbane interclub competition spread the ripples a little wider on the pond. The next step – a 12.72 at Clay’s first major hit-out in Canberra on 13 February – made a really big splash. The 25-year-old Clay had stepped into territory previously occupied by Pearson only. ....

Neil Robbins (1929-2020): Australia's steeple pioneer

Geoff Warren and Neil Robbins, advertising a meeting to raise funds for the 1954 Commonwealth Games team.
A column by Len Johnson
Neil Robbins knew Ron Clarke well enough to call him ‘Fat’, Clarke’s boyhood family nickname. He was a teammate of John Landy and Marjorie Jackson; a clubmate of Les Perry, Geoff Warren and Dave Stephens, ‘the Flying Milko’. He trained with Merv Lincoln and many others under legendary coach Franz Stampfl.
Robbins, who passed away on 6 December at the age of 91, was also Australia’s pioneer in the steeplechase, finishing seventh in the country’s first home Olympics in Melbourne in 1956, the first occasion Australia had been represented in the event. A lifelong supporter of Footscray Football Club (now the Western Bulldogs), he would have appreciated performing well on the MCG where the Bulldogs had won their first Aussie Rules premiership just two years earlier. ....
