st there were 155,884,601 Americans who have been fully vaccinated against COVID. That’s 47 percent of all Americans, according to the CDC. Becker’s Hospital Review tells us that Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine, and Connecticut lead the states with over 60 percent vaccinated in each but the disappointing news is that, in Tennessee, for every 10 people you pass on the sidewalk six are unprotected.
That’s right, Tennessee is 46
th among the states who have responded to the nation’s current death toll of 605,000 deaths, this after the United States has had 33.7 million confirmed cases in just the last 15 months. ....

It was one of fourteen medical schools established after the Civil War for the purpose of training African Americans to become physicians. In its twenty-three years of existence, it graduated one hundred fifty-five doctors, most of whom went on to practice in Memphis. After it was forcibly closed, partly due to Jim Crow, no black doctors were trained in Memphis for over fifty years.
The University of Tennessee Medical School has shown real commitment to expanding their diversity efforts. But now, Meharry Medical School, based in Nashville, is committed to establishing a Memphis campus over the next few years. Meharry, affiliated with the United Methodist Church, is one of three historically black medical schools. ....

St. Anthony Hospital's first Black doctor was generous from Oklahoma to Africa

The “Realizing the Dream” exhibit at the Oklahoma History Center shares the story of the African American experience in Oklahoma.
One of the items on display is a large X-ray machine once owned by renowned Oklahoma City Dr. Gravelly Eugene Finley Sr. This artifact offers guests a connection to a man who provided quality medical care to his fellow Oklahoma City residents, as well as to people in need half a world away.
Dr. Finley once remarked, “I always wanted to be a doctor. No one believed in me, but here I am.”
He was born in Batesville, Ark., but finished high school in Little Rock, which was the closest city with a high school that accepted Black students. ....

CHARLOTTE A young, black man who grew up in rural North Carolina in the 1940’s had big aspirations of becoming a doctor. Despite many obstacles, he refused to allow racism and segregation kill his dream.
“It wasn’t easy, I can tell you that,” says Dr. Kenneth Chambers, one of Charlotte’s first black OBGYN’s.
Chambers decided at a young age he would become a doctor. He was born in rural Montgomery County, North Carolina. He says his parents had difficulty getting adequate medical care, and that fueled the fire in him to make a difference. ....
