Mehlville Fire approves preliminary tax rates after 9.5-percent hike for assessments

The Mehlville Fire Protection District Board of Directors has unanimously approved preliminary tax rates for this year that likely equate to the lowest rates in the county.
At the April 7 meeting, Chief Financial Officer Brian Bond told board members Aaron Hilmer, Bonnie Stegman and Ed Ryan that preliminary assessed values had increased nearly 9.5 percent since the 2020 tax rates were fixed, with a 7.64-percent increase in residential property assessed values and a 12.85-percent increase in commercial assessed values.
Bond used the 2021 tax rate calculator on the Missouri state auditor’s website to project the 2020 nonbinding tax rate, which is the maximum allowable amount that may be levied. ....

Everyone safe after fire destroys Affton chemical plant; chief recounts the scene

A four-alarm chemical fire that sent mushroom clouds of smoke over Affton and forced evacuations of residents Thursday afternoon was something Affton fire officials had long dreaded, but the blaze was fully contained within hours and residents could return to their houses by Thursday evening.
Although the wooden structure of at least one building of the Manor Chemical Company plant at 6901 Heege Road completely burned to the ground, the only injury from the heavy fire was to a firefighter who was overcome by heat or stress and was taken by ambulance to a hospital.
Affton Fire Protection District Chief Nick Fahs talked to reporters about the fire, which started around 2:30 p.m., at the AFPD’s new firehouse on Valcour about 8:30 p.m. By that time, the injured firefighter was “OK,” all residents were back in their homes, all streets were opened, and the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District cleared the sewer lines. An active investigation was still going on at the mangl ....

Mixed-use development proposed for 100 acres of MetLife's campus – St. Louis Call Newspapers

An in-person town hall will be held this week at the MetLife campus in South County about a proposed mixed-use development at the 100-acre site that would include two new subdivisions with more than 170 single-family houses, a 210-unit apartment building, nearly 8 acres of commercial development fronting Tesson Ferry Road and public spaces like a plaza and amphitheater.
The land size and scope of the project between Tesson Ferry and Keller roads, called “Tesson Ridge,” makes the mixed-use project one of the largest developments in South County history larger in size even than the roughly 47-acre Crestwood mall site, which is also the subject of a pending mixed-use redevelopment proposal. ....

Several school districts in the St. Louis region are making their online programs permanent for children as early as kindergarten in an effort to offer more flexibility and choice. But some critics worry the isolation could have negative social and emotional effects on kids.
With no COVID-19 vaccine yet approved for children under age 16, school administrators say it’s highly likely some amount of virtual learning will be necessary next school year. But they also say their online schools are here to stay. ....
