Local author, John DiGirolamo, has a passion for policing and was inspired to tell the officers stories after listening to a summer full of negative portrayals of police officers in the media in 2020. âThere was a constant drumbeat yet you never heard the officers side, especially that of small town rural officers,â DiGirolamo said. The result was âItâs Not About the Badgeâ â six stories about real cops including five from Chaffee County and one from Omaha. The stories tell of the dangers they face in their work of protecting the public, often when a âsimpleâ call turns into a dangerous situation that could cost them their lives. But even more interesting are the stories of why they got into law enforcement.

In other district news, Yates shared that, while students took time off during spring break, school resource officer Megan DiGirolamo had a busy week. The Buena Vista Police Department, with the help of the school district, hosted a Crisis Intervention Team training for local law enforcement. âCIT helps officers recognize people struggling with mental health issues or in mental crisis, and aids in getting these individuals the proper help and resources. CIT-Youth is a 3-day training focusing on adolescent development and behavioral health concerns specific to young people,â Yates said. âA cornerstone of CIT-Youth training is the extensive use of a highly realistic and emotionally intense role play scenarios using professional actors to portray people in crisis. Having a better understanding of adolescents and how to interact with adolescents in crisis was a good way for Buena Vista Police Department officers to learn new skills in de-escalation and communication.â
