The Bottle Shop is just a couple doors down from Ripple on Pike Street in downtown Covington near the intersection with Madison Avenue. City officials joined owners Kathleen and Matt Haws for a ribbon-cutting on Tuesday. Kathleen Haws described the new shop as small but mighty . It carries nearly 150 bottles in its 350-sq. ft. space. She said it was important that the size of the shop and the wine selection not be seen as intimidating, and that the shop offer a friendly and relaxed vibe. ....
The $41,950 in incentives come from the fourth round of the city s annual small business program, a $150,000 yearly initiative that offers help with either first-year rent or exterior improvements.
“We’re thrilled by the number of incentives and the diverse nature of the projects,” said Ross Patten, Covington’s assistant economic development director. “Despite the pandemic, this program is doing exactly what we designed it to do: Help small businesses get off the ground, help create jobs in Covington, and improve the business climate.”
With the approval of these eight projects, the program will have helped 69 small businesses in Covington since the beginning of 2018. ....

(WVIR) - Albemarle County Public Schools is finalizing summer school plans as more students than ever are expected to participate. Schools will provide academic assistance in the morning to students who need to catch up on learning and build skills that may have fallen behind during the coronavirus pandemic. The afternoons will be centered on some of the programs schools offer that were more difficult to convey in the online environment. “The part I think is really exciting and innovating is the afternoon programming,” ACPS Superintendent Matt Haas said. “It will be provided by our local, in some case statewide providers. Specialty programming around physical activity, leadership, and social and emotional wellbeing for those students.” ....
