Biomass Availability with Matthew Langholtz – Advanced BioFuels USA

(Climate Now/Oak Ridge National Laboratory)  Bioenergy is a renewable energy for its carbon neutrality – plants absorb CO2 during photosynthesis and emit the same amount when combusted for energy. But to significantly reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, substantial amounts of biomass, or organic matter, are required. What types of biomass can sustainably and economically be used for energy? What policy or market adjustments can be made to allow bioenergy to compete with more affordable oil or gasoline? Climate Now hosts James Lawler and Katherine Gorman spoke with Matthew Langholtz, Natural Resources Economist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, to better understand biomass availability and the role bioenergy could play in the transition away from fossil fuels.  READ MORE/PODCAST

ORNL Scientists Mark EE Week with Climate Talks to Local Students – Advanced BioFuels USA

(Oak Ridge National Laboratory) Esther Parish is one of eight scientists from the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory talking to students in nine schools across East Tennessee as part of National Environmental Education Week, or EE Week. On April 13, she spoke to Cathy Kimball’s fifth grade class at Lenoir City Middle School. The discussion covered renewable energy resources, science career paths and how climate change may affect East Tennessee. “I think it is important to reach out to young people about environmental science because the choices that our society makes regarding renewable energy resource development and climate change mitigation will have long-term effects on their environment, health and future quality of life,” said Parish of ORNL’s Environmental Sciences Division who specializes in geography and landscape ecology.
