We didn t know what to expect for a turnout, and it just makes my heart so happy. In September 2020, Petty, Beth Labenz, Watonwan County SNAP Educator, and a food shelf board member wrote up a grant for a new home for the food shelf. In October, the food shelf received news that their grant proposal had been accepted. A few months later in December, the food shelf purchased Mayberry Lanes, and began demolition and construction in February. ....
Board approves food shelf grant, Local Road Improvement Projects resolutions St. James Plaindealer At Tuesday s Watonwan County Board meeting, the board approved a grant for the remodeling of the new Watonwan County Food Shelf and multiple resolutions for Local Road Improvement Projects (LRIP). The Watonwan County Food Shelf was able to purchase Mayberry Lanes through a grant, but work is needed inside of the former bowling alley. The current space for the food shelf is inside the Watonwan County Resource Center and is only 600 square feet. The new facility will be 6,000 square feet. Right now, people feel as though they don t even know where we re at, said Watonwan County Food Shelf Director Katherine Petty. We typically see 75-80 families a month and we do expect with being more in the open that we will probably see an increase in families. ....
Volunteers begin demolition on Mayberry Lanes to make room for new Watonwan County Food Shelf St. James Plaindealer On Thursday night, local volunteers helped rip out old sections of Mayberry Lanes in preparation for the new location of the Watonwan County Food Shelf. In early January, the food shelf was able to buy Mayberry Lanes via auction. We were excited, said food shelf director Katherine Petty. We were super excited. The new 6,000 square foot space will be a much-needed upgrade over the current cramped location. We re going to be able to have a storage area, said Petty. The front is going to be a grocery store-style so people can walk up and down the aisles and choose what they want. ....
